Government e-Marketplace (GeM)

GeM is an abbreviation for ‘Government e-Market’. GeM is developed to create an e-market place for the Government department, just like any other e-commerce website available. The only difference here is, ONLY GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS are the buyers. Through GeM, vendors or service providers can display their products. Government departments raise the bid through Gem portal and the Vendors and Service Providers can participate in the bid. This entire process takes place in GeM.

GeM portal provides four different categories for sellers.

  • Certain products including vehicles and medical supplies can be uploaded only by original manufacturers. The manufacturer needs to register an OEM under the GeM portal. The logo, name etc of the manufacturer must be trademarked in order to proceed with the registration. There will be a third party verification from the side of the Gem.

  • The second category is authorised resellers who have an authorisation number from the original manufacturer. The authorisation number must be created through the GeM portal itself.

  • Next category is resellers, of items such as stationaries and similar products, who are not necessarily authorised with the original manufacturer.

  • The last and fourth category includes OEM, authorised resellers and resellers, all of them together.

  • Sellers can participate in the bidding only after the uploaded items for display are published. The government has set a golden parameter which states how to participate in the bidding. If the displayed item and the bid are not in sync, you cannot participate in the bidding process. The time of bidding will be given two or three weeks prior. You can amend your products or add new products to sync with the bid within the said period. So, it is important to monitor whether a bid is open or not.

  • GeM portal gives utmost importance to quality; hence, only top-quality products should be uploaded. If you get blacklisted for any reason, you will not be able to upload products in the GeM product further on. Furthermore, once an account is registered using a PAN and mobile number, you cannot create another account using the same.

  • The GeM portal is developed by the Central Government of India to ensure transparency and quality. Every state and central Government goods and service purchases would hereon will occur through GeM. Hence, if you are not registered with GeM, your chances of losing out Government clients will be high.
